As an interracial couple, we have always been keen that conversations about our children's background will come up eventually.  For our son, "eventually" came sooner than we thought. Even as a 2nd grader, schools were already teaching about nationalities and how that plays into "diversity".

Even at a young age, we stressed to our son the importance of not judging other people based on their race or color. So sometime during the school year, we were notified that the school will be hosting their annual Diversity Week. So as many of you know, this type of week would be dedicated to honoring all cultures. His teacher at the time did an exercise with the class that asked them what their nationalities were. They did a roundtable where each child would share what they were (German, Polish, African American, Hispanic, etc.)

When they got to our son Tony, he did not answer as one would expect. Instead of sharing that he was part African America, part Filipino and part Spanish, he answered "I'm Tony"...LOL! His teacher was so tickled with his response that she contacted me and shared what had happend! To this day, I will never forget just how honest a child's <3 truly is....
